History

The first permanent European settlers arrived in the Miami Area in the early 1800s, people who came from the Bahamas to hunt for treasure from the ships that ran aground on the treacherous Great Florida reef. Some accepted Spanish land offers along the Miami River and Seminole Indians began to migrate to the area at about the same time. Following the Spanish sale of Florida to the United States, the area was affected by the Second Seminole Indian war with most of the population of Miami killed or driven off.

South beach was the first section of Miami Beach to be developed, starting in the 1910s, thanks to the efforts of Carl G. Fisher, the Lummus Brothers, John Collins, and others. The area has gone through many man-made and natural changes over the years, including a booming regional economy, together with increased tourism, and a 1926 hurricane that destroyed much of the area. In the 1930s, an architectural revolution brought Art Deco, Streamline Moderne, and Nautical Moderne architecture to the Beach. To this day, South Beach remains the world's largest collection of Streamline Moderne Art Deco architecture and is one of its most appealling attractions..
